The Gender Differences in Characteristics between Young Male and Female Psychiatrists in Korea

Abstract

|
Objectives：Now that the number of female doctors has steadily been increasing in Korea, especially in the field of psychiatry, we are to conduct a preliminary study to assess the changing situation. The purpose of this study is to identify gender differences in the characteristics of young women and men psychiatrists.
Methods：We emailed questionnaires regarding academic activities, clinical practices and personal lives to 1,137 board-certified psychiatrists in the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association with experiences less than 15 years.
Results：122 responded to the questionnaire; men were 77(63%) and women were 45(37%). The mean duration of experience as psychiatrists was 6.5 years. There were no gender differences in demographic characteristics except marital status, and in work settings. Clinical practice was higher priority than research for psychiatrists of both genders, however, women psychiatrists spent less time in research than men did. While 60% of men psychiatrists did academic activities because of their own interests, pursuing scholarly achievements were the main reason for academic activities of 55% of women psychiatrists. More women thought they had a disadvantage than men.
Conclusion：While women psychiatrists were highly motivated toward academic achievements, they spent less time in research than men did. They felt disadvantaged and less confident concerning academic activities. These findings may be one explanation to the fact that there are yet few women leaders and active participants in academic activities in Korean psychiatry. Further researches on the Korean situation of women psychiatrists are needed.
